In rural Haiti, access to education is far from guaranteed. Political instability, poverty, and frequent school closures have left thousands of children without consistent learning opportunities. At GOALS Haiti, we believe every child deserves the tools to build a better future, and that starts with the ability to read and write.
Literacy is more than a skill it’s a lifeline.
The impact of our literacy program goes beyond test scores. In communities where access to books is limited and adult literacy rates are low, GOALS is planting the seeds of a learning culture. Children take books home. Parents listen as their kids read aloud. Reading becomes a shared experience—and with it, a sense of pride and possibility.
We also train youth leaders to serve as literacy mentors, creating a powerful ripple effect. When kids see someone their age leading a reading circle or helping younger peers sound out words, they’re inspired to keep going. They begin to believe that they, too, can be leaders.
As Haiti continues to face severe instability, the public education system remains deeply disrupted. Many schools are closed. Others operate only a few days a week. For many families in rural areas, GOALS is the only consistent place where children can learn, feel safe, and access opportunity.
In this context, our literacy work is nothing short of essential. It's a stabilizing force. A source of empowerment that strengthens communities and creates individuals who become a lifelong learner.
We’ve seen firsthand what happens when children have access to learning: their confidence grows, their dreams expand, and their voices strengthen. Literacy doesn’t just change the future, it changes the present too, hope takes root.
